Edinburgh-based sports app developer bags £1 million investment

Fanbase has secured £1m in a funding round led by SaltPay, along with angel groups and other private investors.

The Edinburgh-based software start-up is developing mobile ticketing solutions and improved fan experience for sports clubs.

It recently launched a new portal for back office teams to collaborate, incorporating allocated stadium mapping, automated subscription and renewals.

The technology is now being used by clubs across football, rugby, netball, ice hockey and handball, primarily in the UK, including Hibernian FC, Dulwich Hamlet FC, Netball Superleague side Strathclyde Sirens, Super 6 rugby team Southern Knights, and Esher RFC.

Fanbase also recently won its first US customer, soccer outfit DeKalb County United in Illinois, and has already secured five additional teams in two weeks.

The business plans to expand its operations and marketing in North America.

Co-founder and chief executive Alasdair Crawley said: “Our vision is for Fanbase to unlock a huge amount of revenue for sports teams by making it easy to buy and engage with sports organisations from one platform.

“We are enabling sports organisations to launch a team branded mobile optimised, sports focussed digital ticketing service in minutes, while increasing hospitality revenue and saving hours per week for staff and volunteers responsible for bookings and operations.”

Crawley, alongside chief product officer Michael Crawley and chief technology officer Carl Barton secured pre-seed funding in 2021.

Headcount is now at 10, with plans to further scale the team over the next 12 months.

Fanbase was recently accepted onto Microsoft’s start-up accelerator programme, which comes with over £250,000 of support.
