Eddie Jones gives verdict on England's newest stars after impressive Italy victory

Eddie Jones has praised his new half-back combination of Marcus Smith and Harry Randall after England beat Italy 0-33 in Rome on Sunday afternoon in the second Six Nations match.

The duo played together for 55 minutes until Randall was replaced by the now joint record England appearance maker Ben Youngs, Smith meanwhile won man of the match.

Jones also was complimentary towards Number 8 Alex Dombrandt, saying: "He (Marcus Smith) played well, Harry Randall did some good things at the start and Dombrandt had a really solid game.

England had scored three of their five tries by half-time and produced a dominant display, never looking troubled by the Italians who challenged France the previous week.

The tries were scored by Smith, Jamie George (2), Kyle Sinckler and Elliot Daly and Jones told ITV after the match: "Yeah, you know a good performance - we started the game well, got a bit of a flow and started the second half well and defended well at the end"

"They're a tough team, they keep coming - if we were a little bit tidier in some of our work in our running lines and support lines in the breakdown it could have been a big score but we're happy with that and worked hard for it."

"As we said to the boys, they've played against New Zealand and France in the first half of those they've been in the game and they weren't in the game today."

Man of the match Marcus Smith opened the try-scoring with a wonderful effort, combining with Saracens' Max Malins to score out wide.

The 23-year-old continued his scintillating form, adding to his try from the first round against Scotland in the Calcutta Cup, he told ITV's Miles Harrison after the match that the group had to pick themselves up after that defeat.

"We put a big emphasis on this week, we were very disappointed on the plane home from Murrayfield and had to pick ourselves up as a group - the leaders spoke well." He explained.

"Eddie spoke earlier in the week about our next job and we put ourselves back in the competition with that win today."

Smith has never played in the Six Nations until this year's competition and his start against Scotland was his first international outside of Twickenham, where he also plays his club rugby for Harlequins.

"I've never played here before and it was a special atmosphere with loads of English fans coming out to support us so we had to put on a show for them and I thought we did that in parts.

"We were a bit scrappy in parts and credit to Italy they threw everything at us and made out ball pretty scrappy at times but to score 35 points is always nice."
