Ed Sheeran 'to play a homeless drug addict' in brand new action-comedy film

Ed Sheehan is set to shock fans as he will soon be seen playing a homeless drug addict in a new action-comedy film.

The 32-year-old father-of-two will star opposite Denise van Outen, Jennifer Saunders, Jaime Winstone, Peter Serafinowicz and Kevin Bishop in a big screen adventure that was filmed in London last year.

The film is titled Sumotherhood and was written and directed by Adam Deacon who was a star of the films Kidulthood, Brotherhood and Anuvahood.

In the past, Ed has caused upset in the acting world when he was crowbarred into an episode of Game of Thrones but has also managed to bag appearances on Home and Away, The Simpsons and Bridget Jones’s Baby.

It is unclear the extent to which Ed will feature in the new film, but will be a rare instance where he is playing a character rather than himself on screen.

A source told The Sun: “Ed plays this bloke who’s not got a home and looks like a crack addict.

“It was filmed a while ago, but work on the movie is almost complete and the hope is it will be out this year.

“The casting makes it an intriguing one and in particular, everyone wants to see Ed. He doesn’t have a massive part in the film and although fans will recognise him straight away, they’ve never seen him looking like this.”

In a sense, Ed is returning to the roots of his fame with his new role - as his debut solo single was all about a drug addict.

The singer burst onto the music scene back in 2011 with the release of his single title The A Team.

Discussing the inspiration behind the song at a later time, Ed explained that he had been inspired to write about a homeless prostitute who was addicted to crack cocaine.

And he said he had been inspired to write the track after visiting a homeless shelter.

He told Billboard back in 2012: “The A Team came from an experience I had when I did a gig at a homeless shelter. I was 18 at the time and kind of quite naïve. So, I was a bit taken aback by some of the stories that I heard.

“I got home that night and I just wrote a lot of the lyrics. I wanted to write it so it sounded kind of upbeat, so you wouldn’t really know what it’s about, because it’s quite a dark subject.”

Ed sparked a backlash when he crowbarred his way into Game of Thrones back in 2017 (PA)

He added at the time: “A drug like crack cocaine is called a Class A drug. That’s in the same category as heroin.

"Instead of making it clear and just saying what the problem was, I’d say, ‘She’s in the Class A team.’ It was kind of my way of covering up [a person’s addiction], I guess, making it a bit more subtle.”
