EastEnders fans 'in tears' as soap says goodbye to Lola in heartbreaking funeral scenes

EastEnders aired the funeral of Lola Pearce on Tuesday night, and viewers were left emotional by the scenes.

Fans sobbed as Walford gathered to say goodbye to the tragic character, who sadly died from a brain tumour just weeks ago.

Lola's white coffin was carried into the service, with messages from her friends and family written on the sides.

Family members including her young daughter Lexi, her husband Jay Brown and her grandfather Billy Mitchell all took a moment to remember her, and pay tribute to the late character.

As the residents broke down in tears over their loss, viewers watching at home were also "in tears" and "sobbing" over the powerful episode.

In one moment, Billy was found struggling at the grave of late relative Jamie Mitchell who also died young.

He was accidentally run over and killed by Martin Fowler back in 2002, and Billy shared his regrets over not looking out for him.

As he remained unsure of whether he could attend the funeral service for Lola, Jay and Phil were on hand to support him and encouraged him to say goodbye.

Lexi showed everyone a video montage she had made, featuring several clips of Lola from before and during her brain tumour battle.

Clips of her and Lexi dancing and another of her and Jay, as well as other clips with her pals and loved ones, left the attendees devastated.

There was also a moment where two of Lola's social media followers paid tribute to her, with one of them revealing her videos had saved her life after she realised her own symptoms needed to be checked out.

As the episode came to an end, viewers shared their reactions to the emotional scenes with many fighting back tears.

Taking to Twitter, one fan said: "Lola's funeral was beautiful yet heartbreaking. The video montage had me in tears (and it's very rare for me to cry at shows)."

Another tweeted: "Absolutely sobbing at eastenders, the Lola storyline has been something else."

A third viewer wrote: "i will never forgive eastenders for killing off lola.. i’m sobbing at tonight’s episode," while a fourth said: "This recording of Lola and her love ones, is so moving, I am in tears."

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
