East Lothian homes and businesses warned of flooding as thunderstorms to hit

A yellow thunderstorm warning has been put in place by the MET Office for East Lothian on Sunday June 25.

The warning has been put in place from 1pm until 9pm and those at the MET have said that the thunderstorms could cause disruption for travellers and localised flooding on Sunday afternoon and evening.

They add that there is a small chance that homes and businesses in the area could be flooded and buildings and temporary outdoor structures could be damaged from floodwater, lightning strikes, large hail or strong winds.

They also say that there is a slim chance that communities in East Lothian will become temporarily cut off by flooded roads.

Travel may also be disrupted up the east coast of northern England and the east coast of Scotland as lightning strikes and flooding could cause delays and cancellations to train and bus services.

Drivers have also been cautioned to keep an eye out for difficult driving conditions caused by spray and sudden flooding on roads.

Power cuts may come into play and other services to homes and businesses could be lost during the spate of thunderstorms.

The MET Office said: “Whilst there remains some uncertainty in whether thunderstorms develop as cooler conditions follow from the west, there is a chance that an organised line of thunderstorms could develop across northern Britain during Sunday afternoon before clearing east into the North Sea during the evening.

“This is more likely to happen across eastern parts of the warning area including northeast England and eastern Scotland.

“Rainfall amounts will vary significantly, but some locations could see 30-40 mm in 1-2 hours. Frequent lightning, large hail (up to 3 cm in diameter) and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards.”
