A new Beat the Street challenge kicked off this week in East Kilbride - with Crosshouse Primary currently topping the leader board.
Wednesday saw the start of the Go Active themed week.
The idea is that people will find something that they might not have tried before to help them continue to keep up their new active habits after the Beat the Street competition comes to an end on Wednesday, October 26, and to explore the sports and leisure options on offer.
More than 11,533 people have signed up to play the Beat the Street East Kilbride game and have together walked, cycled, wheeled, run and scooted an incredible 118,000 miles so far in the competition.
Anyone of any age is invited to take part and you can still get involved now by picking up a card from one of the distribution points on the website.
Teams of all varieties including schools, community groups and workplaces have been battling it out for the past several weeks across the average and total points leader boards to take home prizes of gift cards if they top the leader board.
There are also prizes for individuals and ‘lucky spot’ prizes just for taking part.
Crosshouse Primary School currently leads the total points leader board with St Kenneth’s Primary School and Long Calderwood Primary in second and third.
Isabelle Murray, head teacher at Crosshouse Primary School, said: “The announcement at assembly that Beat the Street had returned to East Kilbride was met with resounding cheers from the children and staff at Crosshouse Primary.
"Since the game started, there has been great enthusiasm and excitement amongst our children and our community. We have noticed an increase in the number of children walking to and from school, which has also reduced traffic congestion.
"On a daily basis our children are keen to share their Beat the Street experiences whether that's finding new boxes, hearing beat box sounds or spotting things in the environment. We have thoroughly enjoyed taking part and look forward to the final few weeks.”
Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s community and enterprise resources committee, Councillor Robert Brown, added: “The Go Active themed week is a celebration of all the ways you can get moving in and around the area.
"Hopefully the past few weeks of the Beat the Street East Kilbride game have shown that one of the simplest ways to get more active is to get out and about on your bike, or on foot, alone or as a family. The bonus is, getting active each day can have a lasting impact on your health.”
Beat the Street East Kilbride is being delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council with support from South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, Smarter Choices, Smarter Places and the Scottish Government.
