North Carolina health investigators have named an interactive garden water feature at El Futuro, a community-based mental health center in Durham County, as the most likely source of the Naegleria fowleri infection that killed a central North Carolina teenager last month. The state's investigation report, dated Sept. 15, says the finding is not conclusive.
The conclusion shifts attention from lakes and ponds to man-made water that children play in. Family members told investigators the teen had contact with the garden feature on Aug. 13, including splashing water on the face, during the likely exposure period.
