Dundee United launch Jair Tavares 'racist' abuse probe but insist microphones were on opposite side of the stadium

Dundee United have launched an investigation into the alleged racist abuse of Hibs player Jair Tavares during their Scottish Premiership win at Tannadice.

The Easter Road side released a statement slamming the treatment of their player following the 1-0 defeat and urging fans to help find the culprit. The Tangerines have now started a probe but in their own statement say just two microphones were active on the night - and both were at the opposite end of the stadium from where the alleged incident took place. United said in their own statement: “ Dundee United FC are aware of a video clip that was widely shared on social media after last night’s cinch Premiership match versus Hibernian FC.

“The footage appeared to transmit either racist or other derogatory language used within the stadium. We are currently investigating the incident and are working with all the relevant stakeholders to isolate the area of the stadium where the audio has been picked up and determine the content clearly.

“Initial investigations can confirm only two microphones were active within the stadium for the broadcast, and both were situated on our TV gantry within the Jerry Kerr Stand and placed at 45-degree angles. The footage shown on the broadcast at the time the alleged incident occurred took place on the opposite side of the stadium from where the two microphones were placed. Dundee United has a zero-tolerance policy towards racism and racists are simply not welcome inside Tannadice Park.”

United launched an investigation last season after one of their players, Jeando Fuchs, was allegedly racially abused by a Ross County fan which prompted then-Tangerines boss Tam Courts to hold up a ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ t-shirt in front of the visiting support at full-time but the probe found there was no evidence of racist language used.
