Dundee council leader says he's wearing masks again amid rising Covid numbers

The leader of Dundee City Council says he's going back to wearing masks amid rising Covid figures.

Cllr John Alexander, who returned to the helm of the local authority after last month's local elections, says coronavirus is "rife" in the city. The SNP administration boss took to social media to claim he was seeing more people than ever getting infected.

On average, Dundee has recorded an average of 219 cases a week per 100,000 people in the week to June 19 - below the Scottish average of 268 but almost triple a recent low of 82 cases a week in the middle of May.

Official coronavirus statistics show that across Scotland, infection rates have risen by 30% in the last week - and that 15.5% of the cases are re-infections among people who have previously had the virus.

Writing on his social media profiles, Cllr Alexander said: "COVID seems to be rife, once again. In fact, I've never had so many friends, family members and colleagues all sick at the same time. Please take care. It's knocking a lot of folk for six. Back to wearing mask, especially on this packed bus."

Experts have expressed concern over a resurgence in coronavirus cases believed to have been caused by the BA.2.12.1 variant, which originated in New York.

Professor Jill Pell, a member of Holyrood's former Covid advisory committee, told MSPs this week that the Scottish Government may have to reintroduce measures such as free testing to keep the virus under control.

Meanwhile, around a fifth of people invited to take up the spring vaccine booster are yet to do so - prompting concerns of a new wave of Covid infections across Scotland as a result.

Professor Linda Bauld, Professor of Public Health at Edinburgh University, said Scotland is “certainly in the middle of a spike”.
