Dumfries dad to run London Marathon for charity

A Dumfries dad is preparing to tackle the London Marathon for two special causes.

Funeral director Jason Bassett will split the money he raises from the 26.2 mile run next Sunday between baby loss charity SiMBA and John’s Journey.

The 33-year-old was inspired by two-year-old John Ferguson, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia, and by the work SiMBA does for bereaved parents.

Jason said: “I saw his story on Facebook. I’ve got a wee boy that’s a similar age and I can’t imagine going through that.

“As soon as you become a parent you experience feelings you’ve never felt before.

“I saw a video of his journey and you can’t imagine it. He’s been a motivation. The money raised will go the family to spend in any way they wish.

“SiMBA recently announced an emergency appeal for donations as they are facing closure due to increased demand and lack of funds.

“They provide memory boxes to bereaved parents to help gather timeless and precious memories of their baby.”

Around 50,000 people will take part in the gruelling run and for Jason it’s been an aim of his for quite some time.

He said: “I’m looking forward to it. I have always dreamt of running the London Marathon and have been applying for a ballot place for the past five years.

“In October I finally received a place in the 2023 London Marathon.

“People have been brilliant with the fundraiser and I’ve managed to raise more than £2,000 so far. It’s been excellent so far.”
