Dublin weather: Met Eireann's dreary forecast as 'heavy falls of rain' to bring flood risk

Met Eireann has issued a rather grim forecast for the next few days as unsettled conditions are here to stay.

The national forecaster said heavy and persistent rain will batter Dublin with a chance of spot flooding. However, it is not all bad news as temperatures are set to jump to a mild 16 degrees on St Patrick's Day.

Two weather warnings are currently in place for parts of the country including a yellow snow/ice alert for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Leitrim, and Sligo. The warning will be valid until 12pm today.

It reads: "Lying snow and freezing temperatures Tuesday evening and Tuesday night. Falls of sleet and snow Wednesday morning could produce some temporary accumulations.

"Potential impacts; icy roads and paths and hazardous travelling conditions."

A separate yellow rain warning is in place for Cork, Kerry, and Waterford until 6am tomorrow. The alert is warning of localised flooding and "difficult travelling conditions".

Today will be a cloudy day with outbreaks of rain developing from late morning. It will be wet through the afternoon and evening. Daytime temperatures will be around 8 to 10 degrees.

Heavy falls of rain could lead to possible spot flooding tonight but the rain will ease off later. It will be a breezy night but relatively mild temperature-wise at 7 to 11 degrees.

Tomorrow will start off mild and breezy with rain clearing through the morning giving way to sunny spells and scattered showers in the afternoon. Some of the showers may be heavy and prolonged. The temperatures will be around 12 to 14 degrees.

There is no further forecast for Dublin but here's what the national outlook says:

Thursday night

"Scattered outbreaks of rain will move up across the country, in a moderate southerly airflow, stronger along southern coasts. Another relatively mild night with lows of 8 to 10 degrees.

Friday (St Patrick's Day)

"A showery day on St. Patrick's Day with sunny spells. Some of the showers will be heavy and prolonged. Relatively mild with highest temperatures of 12 to 15 or 16 degrees, in moderate to fresh southerly winds.

Friday night

"A mix of clear spells and isolated showers with some mist and fog patches as the winds fall light and variable. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees."
