Dublin TikTok lawyer explains rule that can extend your daily lunch break

A top lawyer from Dublin has stunned workers with a lesser-known fact about breaks at work, and when you can extend your rest time.

Richard Grogan, who has a growing following online especially on TikTok, has become well known for his no-nonsense breakdown of the law for those who are not well-versed. Taking to Twitter this week, Mr Grogan told workers that if they are interrupted on their break -to carry out anything to do with their job - then they are entitled to start their rest time again.

Mr Grogan acknowledged that many workers wouldn't know about this rule. He wrote in a Twitter post: “I would have thought, wrongly, that the right to proper breaks was well understood. Obviously not with over 500K views on this short TikTok video."

Mr Grogan also said that rest breaks are "important for health and safety purposes.” Below the post, he republished the TikTok video, in which he explained: “I was asked if a break of yours was interrupted, what’s the law on it?”

“Then you’re entitled to restart your break and as I’d say; that’s the law and that’s a fact," he added. The video posted on TikTok amassed hundreds of thousands of views and has many admitting they had no idea this was allowed, with others saying there is “no way” their employer would allow it.

One person responded under the clip saying: “If I told my boss I was extending my break because I had to run and help with something, think I’d lose my job.” Another said: “I'd love to see this actually happen. In fact, I'd love to get a break... I don't get one.”

A third person said: "Right, I'm going to try this next day on my boss." A fourth person said: "Hahahaha as a manager good luck with this, I don’t even get a day off without being interrupted. No chance of 30mins."
