Dublin pubs: Cobblestone to host 'Last Waltz' gig for charity amid fears of demolition

The Cobblestone pub are hosting a "Last Waltz" gig for charity amid fears of a possible demolition in the coming months.

Last November, planning permission for a 114-bedroom hotel on the site was rejected after a campaign to save the historic Smithfield music venue.

Hundreds of objections to the plans had been lodged from all over the world and a ceili was held on O'Connell Street in a bid to #SavetheCobblestone

Customers and staff alike celebrated the win with Dublin City Council drawing attention to the cultural significance of the famous pub.

Now, despite being named one of Lonely Planet's best 20 pubs in Ireland the Cobblestone is once again under threat.

Marron Estates appealed DCC's decision to refuse planning permission on the Cobblestone site.

A decision on the appeal is now due on 4 May with staff concerned that this day could signal the end.

The Cobblestone has planned a free gig for the bank holiday weekend to celebrate what makes the pub special with donations going towards Brother Kevin and Capuchin Centre.

A line-up for the gig will be announced soon.

The bar posted: "With An Bord Pleanála decision on the future of The Cobblestone due on the 4th of May, the May Bank Holiday weekend may well be the very last time we can enjoy ourselves free from a possible demolition sentence.

"We hope that they will rule against the appeal, we've enjoyed being back open and seeing so many friendly faces and meeting many more.

"Having just being named one of the top 20 pubs to visit in Ireland by Lonely Planet we would like to continue to provide a space for artists to present their craft to anyone that visits from home and abroad.

"The music has been hopping lately and the buzz only keeps getting better, but until then we can deal with the unknown the only way we know how, and that is to have the craic!

"April 29th, in the Back Bar we are hosting The Last Waltz, which will be a free gig with the option to make a donation to the Brother Kevin and Capuchin Centre, who have continued their Trojan Work all throughout this Pandemic despite the increased workload.

"Line-up to be announced in the coming weeks, but don't worry, we have a few surprises in store for you!"

Fans from all over the world were devastated to hear that the pub's future was once again at risk.

One person said: "I am from Brazil and watching musicians jamming in The Cobblestone is such a unique way was one of the highlights of my life, I will never forget it. Really hope that more people have that opportunity."

Another wrote: "I know there is global support for this great venue. We hope Irish music and culture is more important then a few more apartments.

"We watch the new glass cages spring up along the quay.”

A third person commented: "You have our support all the way from Massachusetts, we love The Cobblestone it is our favorite pub in Ireland. We are praying for you!"
