Drunk woman, 61, attacked drinker with bottle outside Salford pub for 'no apparent reason'

A drunk woman who hit a man with a bottle 'for no apparent reason' outside a Salford pub has walked free from court.

Adele Mortimer, 61 , left the victim with wounds to his head and face after the attack outside the B'hive Inn in Salford on October 2, last year. CCTV footage captured her initial row with the victim, who pushed her, and she walked away. She then returned a few minutes later, and hit him with a bottle.

Mortimer pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and was handed a suspended sentence of 9 months at Manchester Crown Court this morning (November 16). Mr Recorder Rigby described her lifestyle and 31 previous convictions as 'chaotic', and warned her she must stay away from offending again to avoid being 'sent to prison at the age of 61'.

The court heard how the pair had both been drinking in the B'hive Inn before the pub closed. The victim realised he had left his house keys and belongings inside the venue, and began 'shouting' to be let back in. CCTV footage shows Mortimer walk past him, and the pair can be seen having a 'brief altercation', before the victim pushed Mortimer, who was holding the same bottle she later assaulted him with.

She walked away, but returned less than ten minutes later and delivered a blow to the victim with the bottle. Prosecuting, Mr Worsfold said she appeared to be 'shouting' at him while he was on the floor 'having already sustained the injuries'. In a victim impact statement, the victim described how he was still suffering from pain due to the injuries above his eye.

The court heard how Mortimer has 31 previous convictions for a range of offences including assault and racially aggravated common assault, but had not been in court since 2016. Defending, Mr O'Leary said Mortimer's guilty plea was 'accompanied by genuine remorse'.

"Miss Mortimer did express genuine remorse and shock and shame when she looked at the photograph of the injuries," he said. "It appears that this was an incident that, while serious, was not totally of her own making. It is sad, and she is very disappointed that after a significant period of stability in her life, her move into a more stable lifestyle has been punctured by this offence."

He noted that Mortimer, of Sangster Court, Salford, had 'trauma' in her past, which contributed to her problems with alcohol and 'played a part in her behaviour'. She was described as an 'isolated individual' who had worked as a catering assistant but was forced to stop after being injured in a road crash.

Mr Recorder Rigby said Mortimer had hit the victim 'for no apparent reason', and told her she had a 'chaotic lifestyle and set of convictions' affected by 'a lot of drinking'. Sentencing, he said she 'must not offend again', or she would be 'going to prison at the age of 61'. He sentenced Mortimer to a 9 month sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered she attend 30 days of a rehabilitation requirement activity programme.

"You have visited many courts over a long period of offending, but it is something of a surprise and to your credit that you managed to stay out of trouble since 2016," he told her.

"This offence is very serious, and could have been a great deal more serious if, for example, the bottle had smashed into the victim's eye."
