Drivers seriously injured in early morning head-on collision

Drivers of a ute and a sports utility vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries following a head-on collision on Wednesday morning.

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to the two-vehicle collision.

Police said the crash occurred about 6.35am when a Toyota Hilux and a Kia Sportage collided on Yamba Drive near the intersection with Mawson Drive.

Northbound lanes on Yamba Drive were closed for nearly three hours after the accident.

ACT Fire & Rescue, ACT Ambulance Service and police attended the scene of the crash.

ACT Emergency Services confirmed the vehicles collided head-on and the drivers suffered serious injuries. They were freed from the vehicles and taken by ambulance to hospital for further treatment.

The ute and the SUV involved in the crash were removed from the scene about 10.30am and traffic returned to normal.

A police investigation is now under way into the head-on collision on the busy stretch in south Canberra.

Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed or has dashcam footage of the collision, or of the Toyota Hilux with NSW registration BD00UU and the Kia Sportage with ACT registration YNE22C in the lead up to the incident, to come forward.
