The flames appear to have completely engulfed the vehicle, the only part of the van still visible is the driver's compartment, with flames seen inside the cabin.
Traffic Scotland has confirmed that the A720 Westbound is now closed just after Sheriffhall roundabout and that emergency services are in attendance.
They also report 20-minute westbound delays and 10 minute eastbound delays as they release pictures of tailbacks along the trunk road.
Edinburgh Live has been informed that a recovery vehicle is at the scene and that the driver appears to be out of the vehicle and was seen by a motorist behind the van, talking on the phone.
We spoke to one driver who witnessed the event, they said: “When I approached cars were unsure what to do, a recovery vehicle was blocking the road behind the van on fire.
“It seemed the driver was out of the van and on the phone 150ft behind the van. The heat that was coming from the van was immense as I passed on the other side of the road.”
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Officers from Police Scotland are currently supporting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service following reports of a vehicle being on fire on the A720 near to Sheriffhall.
"A lane closure is in place temporarily and will be removed as soon as possible.”
