A car driver has been charged over a crash in regional Victoria that left his four passengers dead.

The 41-year-old man was the sole survivor from a Peugeot that collided with a Toyota Hilux ute at an intersection in Pine Lodge, near Shepparton, last week.

The car went on to hit a road sign before coming to rest in a nearby paddock.

The Peugeot driver suffered serious chest injuries in the crash, while the ute driver from nearby Nathalia suffered minor injuries.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives on Wednesday charged the 41-year-old man with four counts of dangerous driving causing death.

He was remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on June 8.

Police were last week struggling to identify two of the four men killed in the crash as none of the passengers were carrying identification at the time.
