An injured climber has been rescued from cliffs in Arbroath after suffering a broken leg. The alarm was raised shortly after 12.30pm yesterday when both of Arbroath RNLI lifeboats were alerted to reports of a person in danger.
Crews scrambled to the scene and conducted a frantic rescue operation in a bid to prevent the individual from further harm.
Dramatic footage taken at the site, which was shared on social media, shows volunteers conducting a high line transfer with the casualty to the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter during extremely windy weather.
In the video, a team member, who is dangerously close to the water, can be seen heaving the victim away from the large, crashing waves which batter the large rocks below while a helicopter hovers above.
Some time later, the volunteer secures the individual into a stretcher and hoist-type contraption. Together they ascend, suspending in the air for a short while before being pulled into safety by personnel in the awaiting aircraft.
A further two volunteers, who appear to be armed with breathing apparatus and safety equipment, remain at the scene of the accident below while a third stands on the cliff edge, presumably to provide further help on land.
After the rescue mission was complete, the individual was taken into a nearby ambulance, however it is unclear whether they were hospitalised for treatment to their injuries.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "The call came in around 12.40pm yesterday to HM Coastguard that there was a climber on Arbroath Cliffs who had suffered a suspected broken leg.
"The climber was winched by the coastguard helicopter from Inverness and passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service who were close to the scene.
"Arbroath, Dundee, Montrose and Stonehaven coastguard rescue teams were also sent along with Arbroath RNLI lifeboat."
RNLI Arbroath Lifeboat has been contacted for further comment.
