'Dozens' of children dead after Russian air strikes in Ukraine as UNICEF reveal 'harrowing' situation

'Dozens' of children have been killed in Ukraine as a result of Russian attacks, according to UNICEF.

It said three of those came overnight after air strikes killed a mother and her kids while they were attempting to flee the country.

UNICEF spokesperson James Elder told RTE Morning Ireland of the 'harrowing' situation.

He said: "Over the weekend, we sent tonnes of emergency medical equipment into 50 hospitals. They're the hospitals where people are working in bunkers and basements.

"That's surgical kits, oxygen, midwifery kits and such. Tonnes and tonnes will continue to flow in. The need continues to outstrip the supply.

"People do not have fresh water and rivers are frozen. They're going days without it. The attacks continue, we see children killed overnight as they tried to flee."

Mr Elder explained how there are dangers both in the short-term and long-term, when asked by the presenters about the situation in some of the cities that UNICEF have been working in.

He said: "Utterly harrowing. We have children in bunkers, with their mothers lying over them at night to add protection. Then you've the hundreds of thousands who have fled their homes and are traumatised. Mothers are telling us that their kids don't cry anymore. There is a lot of trauma, we need these missiles to stop.

"At the moment, the death toll is 20 children, these are official UN verified figures and it's extremely difficult to verify numbers. There is no doubt it's higher than that. We're well into the dozens, after three more killed overnight"
