For a brief moment last week, it was possible to imagine that President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had found a patch of common ground in their standoff over the federal debt ceiling.

"We're going to come together, because there's no alternative," Biden predicted.

"It's not that difficult to get to an agreement," McCarthy ventured.
