Down stalwart Kevin McKernan confirms inter-county retirement after 16 seasons of service

One of Down football’s longest-serving inter-county players, Kevin McKernan, has announced his retirement from the county game after 16 years playing in the red and black.

The Burren clubman was called up to the senior panel by the-then Down boss Ross Carr after captaining Abbey CBS, Newry to Hogan Cup success in 2006.

He was an integral part of of the 2010 squad that shocked Kerry and Kildare to reach the 2010 All-Ireland final under James McCartan.

The Mournemen were edged out 0-16 to 0-15 by Cork while McKernan was overlooked by the All-Star selectors later that year as Cork’s Graham Canty took the centre half-back slot.

McKernan also represented Ireland in the International Rules series and, in recent years he has played in several positions for various Down managers.

However, the 34-year-old failed to feature in either of Down’s Championship outings this season.

They crashed out of the Ulster Championship following a 0-23 to 2-7 loss to Monaghan in Clones and last Saturday’s 0-24 to 1-12 Tailteann Cup defeat in Cavan ended a disappointing campaign which also saw Down relegated from Division Two.

Confirming his retirement via a statement on social media, McKernan said: “There was little that could come close to the roar of the red and black supporters as Down were on the front foot in games, it was truly inspirational.

“We came close on All-Ireland final day in 2010 and it's the run-in of games that led to that final that I was remember fondly. Thank you for your time, money and energy to support us.

“I am excited now to continue to put my shoulder to the wheel on the playing field for my beloved club Burren. What lies ahead excites me, whatever that may be.

"It was the most amazing time of my life to be able to wear the Down jersey and I hope that every man, woman and child realises that there are brighter days ahead for our proud county.

"Do what you can for your club in the pursuit of Down playing on the biggest stage again. I know this will happen in the near future as the talent is in our county. Thank you for the memories.”

In their own statement, Down GAA paid their tributes to McKernan.

“We wish Kevin McKernan all the best as he retires from intercounty football," the statement read.

“He has been an exceptional servant for Down football in a distinguished career that spanned 15 years and almost 170 games (including 50 championship games).

“Kevin’s commitment to the Down team was wholehearted, unwavering and borne of a desire to represent his county to the best of his ability.

“On and off the field, he was a leader and a loyal team-mate. He had the distinction of playing competitive football for Down against 30 counties and in 30 county grounds.

“On behalf of all associated with Down GAA, we hope he enjoys his continuing career with Burren and time with his family, and we know he will have plenty to offer his club and county in time to come.”
