Donald Trump threatens to demolish Kennedy Center, lawyers insist it’ll become ‘unsafe, decrepit structure’ without Trump-led renovations

Donald Trump‘s legal team is threatening to completely demolish the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts if he doesn’t get his way. The arts center, which is a living memorial to President Kennedy, has been at the center of repeated controversies during the second Trump administration.

Soon after he returned to the White House, it was renamed “The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts”, and his name was added to the sign in front of the building. That kicked off a wave of artists refusing to perform there, and in January 2026 the Washington National Opera confirmed they were leaving, as box office revenue had collapsed and donor confidence in the institution was “shattered”.

Faced with a disaster, Trump decreed that the center be closed altogether for two years of renovations, saying, “I have determined that The Trump Kennedy Center, if temporarily closed for Construction, Revitalization, and Complete Rebuilding, can be, without question, the finest Performing Arts Facility of its kind, anywhere in the World.”

Kennedy Center “will be required to be taken down”

The controversies have resulted in several battles with artists who pulled out of concerts, and legal rulings about the renaming and renovation. Now Trump has launched a fresh challenge to put his name back on the building, conduct his renovations, and delivered an ominous threat about what’ll happen if a federal judge rules against him.

As reported by The Guardian, a legal filing by Trump administration lawyers warns that the renovations must take place, or else:

“Without those efforts, the Center will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will be required to be taken down, with a determination to follow on what to build on the site, such as a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River that has been proposed, by some, for many years.”

This is the first time the prospect of the total destruction of the memorial to Kennedy has been raised. Worryingly, they’re a credible threat, as shown by Trump’s demolition of the East Wing of the White House.

If he does intend to destroy the Kennedy Center, expect fierce opposition. Former White House ethics czar Norm Eisen took to X to say “his path of destruction knows no bounds & he will answer it in court”:

Singer/songwriter Bill Madden was more direct, comparing Trump to “a toddler threatening to smash his toys unless he gets more candy”:

The Guardian also quotes activist group Hands Off the Arts, which campaigns against government censorship: “President Trump today issued the judge and American people a threat: ‘Allow me to hijack JFK’s memorial or I will turn it into a crater.’ As Americans, we have already watched in anger the obliteration of the East Wing to satisfy Trump’s vanity – we won’t let it happen again to the Kennedy Center. This is the people’s memorial to honor JFK, and we refuse to let it be desecrated or demolished.”
