Passengers have been warned by train operator Avanti that all trains between Manchester and London have been cancelled for the rest of the day. Amid soaring temperatures across the country causing overheating and fires, passengers have been told 'not to come to the station'.
The full message posted to the operator's Twitter account reads: “Extreme Heat: All services stopped. Do not come to the station. Due to the extreme heat causing multiple incidents across the network, all Avanti West Coast services have now been withdrawn for the rest of today.
It follows reports of fires on the track affecting services. Several Manchester services on the rails have been cancelled today and services on the Bury and Rochdale Metrolink lines were suspended due to the heatwave
Customers with tickets for Tueday (July 19) can use them on Wednesday (July 20) or Thursday (July 21) - or claim a refund. Customer service officials are also telling passengers that they may see disruption into Wednesday.
Passengers in England and Wales were warned not to travel unless absolutely necessary on Tuesday, as temperatures in parts of the country hit temperatures of 40 Celsius. Network Rail has raised its warning to travellers urging them not to attempt to travel north from London into the 'red zone' where the highest temperatures are anticipated.
