Police are investigating the death of a five-week-old baby on the New South Wales far south coast over the weekend.

Officers were called to Moruya Hospital on the evening of Saturday, February 18, after the infant suffering a head injury was brought in by her parents.

She died shortly after midnight on Sunday, February 19.

Police said two Rottweiler-type dogs were seized by rangers from the local Eurobodalla Shire Council.

A spokesperson from NSW Ambulance said crews were called to a home in Moruya on Saturday night to reports of a baby suffering injuries after being attacked by a dog.

En route to the home, paramedics learned the baby was being transported to hospital in a private vehicle.

The South Coast Police District is continuing to make inquiries.

Moruya is 305 kilometres south of Sydney and has a population of about 4,000 people.

Late last year, a toddler in the NSW Central West town of Cowra died when he was attacked by two dogs, including a  Rottweiler, outside a motel.

More than 1,000 dog attacks were reported across the state in a three-month period last year.
