A petition launched by a Dundee-based MSP to make dog stealing a specific offence has been signed by over 1000 people.
North East MSP Maurice Golden is taking a bill through the Scottish Parliament to increase the punishment for those who steal dogs.
His member’s bill will enter the official consultation period next month, with almost all Holyrood parties expressing support for the campaign.
Now more than 1000 members of the public have signed an online petition calling for the legislation change.
As it stands, the abduction of a beloved family pet is regarded alongside the theft of other household commodities.
Dog charities say that doesn’t give dogs the recognition in law they deserve, and under Dundee-based Mr Golden’s plans anyone convicted of dog theft could face five years in jail.
The new law would also improve data collection so police forces could accurately record how many dog thefts take place, what the detection and conviction rate is, and which breeds and geographical areas are worst-affected.
Charities estimate that dog theft increased by as much as 170 per cent during the pandemic as more families sought the companionship of pets.
Scottish Conservative North East MSP Maurice Golden said: “The law in Scotland needs to change to recognise the value and importance of dogs.
“As it stands, someone who steals a beloved family pet is regarded in the same way as someone who steals a TV or any other household commodity.
“Dogs are worth so much more – in some cases they are the most important part of a person’s life.
“It seems the public agree and it’s great more than 1000 people have already signed the petition for change.”
And he added: “Dog charities have also made their feelings clear, and my bill has the support of almost every party in Scotland except the Greens.
“All this points to a strong appetite to strengthen the law to ensure those who steal dogs are punished severely.
“A tougher punishment will also boost deterrence, meaning those considering embarking on this despicable act may well think twice.”
