Doctor Michael Mosley explains new diet that helped him lose a stone in 21 days

A fat loss expert has released a new weight loss diet that helped him shed a stone in under a month. TV presenter Doctor Michael Mosley, who is a regular on the ITV talk show This Morning, says he lost a stone over just three weeks using the Fast 800 Keto diet after indulging in treats and booze over the Christmas period.

Mosley's original Fast 800 program tells those looking to lose weight to consume a Mediterranean style diet filled with fruits and vegetables, while eating 800 calories a day for 12 weeks, as reported by the Daily Record. However, the new Fast 800 keto diet, includes the principles of a short term low-carb, ketogenic, and a Mediterranean diet paired with intermittent fasting.

The new plan works on a 50:50 rule, with no more than 50g of carbs, while keeping protein intake above 50g - with a daily intake of 800 to 1,000 calories supposedly helping to burn fat stores while maintaining muscle. Mr Mosley, the man behind the 5:2 diet, developed the diet with his wife Dr Claire Bailey in a new book edition released in December.

According to the book description for Fast 800 Keto, the plan is more beneficial, healthier and sustainable than a traditional keto plan. "The secret to this new approach is that it combines keto with intermittent fasting, which means you go into ketosis faster, while also being able to enjoy delicious Mediterranean-style food," he said.

In recent years research has found the keto diet to be effective for those with type 2 diabetes, assisting in reducing central obesity and managing blood sugar levels. The Fast 800 Keto diet should not be followed as a long-term lifestyle plan, due to its restrictive nature.

How to follow The Fast 800 Keto Diet

Following a keto diet means reducing the amount of carbohydrates you eat, while increasing protein, healthy fats, fruit and vegetables. This complements the life-extending Mediterranean diet, built around fruit, vegetables, seafood, beans and nuts.

In The Fast 800 Keto, Dr Mosley recommends following the rule of 50:50. Keeping carbohydrates under 50g per day and ensuring protein remains above 50g, all while keeping your daily calorie intake around 800 to 1,000.

Dr Michael explained in an Instagram video the diet's basics and said: "When you're on a Keto diet, the main thing is to cut out the sugary stuff, but also the carbs - that means things like potatoes and rice. Instead, you pile in all those luscious, green leafy veg.

"The point of a Keto diet, is when you go on it, you lose weight very fast, but it also suppresses your hunger hormone, something called ghrelin. On top of that, it also helps preserve your muscles."

This diet is very restrictive and is not designed to be kept to in the longer term. In fact, thefast800.com recommends following it for no more than 12 weeks, or until you have achieved a normal BMI (body mass index). Then, you are encouraged to move to Mosley's 5:2 or Way of Life diets.

The New 5:2 is 'fasting' on two days a week by restricting calories to 800, while Way of Life is a "nutritionally-balanced guide to eating a healthy Mediterranean-style diet for life".
