Miscued idea of ‘mild’ Omicron hits third dose drive in Pune, say doctors

PUNE: Only 6% of the total beneficiaries for the precaution dose of Covid vaccines have availed it eight days into the drive in the district and the health officials attributed the low response to the miscued idea that the Omicron strain caused mild illness, besides many citizens not completing the requisite gap of nine months stipulated for availing the third shot.

Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, assistant director (health services), said, “Mild illness being linked with Omicron strain is primarily the reason for low response to precaution dose. People rush for the shot only when they see death figures rising, till then they remain lax. That is unfortunate.”
