Former FAI boss John Delaney is set to jet back into Ireland to attend his mother’s funeral.
Joan Delaney died suddenly on Monday in Tipperary.
Delaney – who is believed to be working in the UK – hasn’t been in the spotlight since he left the football association after a number of financial scandals.
But it is expected he will be seen for the first time at his mother’s Requiem Mass St Michael’s Church in Tipperary town at noon.
Mrs Delaney will be laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery afterwards.
Delaney – who served as FAI chief from March 2005 to March 2019 - has kept a low profile since the storm about spending emerged.
His downfall came after a report published by Kosi revealed how the FAI had forked out just under €1million in personal expenses to him over a five-year period.
The association splashed out the huge sum in “excess” spending for Delaney, who had been on a salary of €360,000.
Personal spending by Delaney on his FAI credit card included jewellery, limousines, hotels and online shopping sites.
According to the Kosi probe, the FAI also splashed out €70,000 for Delaney’s 50th birthday bash, although a separate investigation from accountants Mazars put the total bill in excess of €80,000.
Delaney later repaid €50,000 for his lavish birthday party.
A criminal inquiry into FAI matters brought by the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement is ongoing.
