Disagreement over Mablethorpe beach named as 1 of best in country

Nottinghamshire Live readers are in disagreement after an East Midlands beach was named as one of the best in the country. The Times put Mablethorpe beach in third on the ‘Best Beaches 2022’ list for the east of England, ahead of Skegness as well as beaches in both Suffolk and Norfolk.

Mablethorpe is celebrated in the article for having “an immaculate prom loaded with ice-cream vendors, chippies and beach huts for hire from £17 per day”. The Times also said the beach has excellent water quality, despite the fact the seaside town was within the top 10 percent of poorest areas in the country, according to the 2019 English Indices of Deprivation.

The Times said: “Don’t let the grim-looking hinterland put you off. Climb the ramp past the Queens Park Close flats and behold the clean, soft, flat sands of a resort that hides its light under bushels of bingo halls, tattoo parlours and discount megastores.”

A lot of people took to social media to say they agreed with the decision and loved the beach - travelling there from Nottinghamshire regularly. Others, though, disagreed, saying there were better options nearby - and that it takes a bit longer than 90 minutes to reach the beach from our county.

Sharna Sawyer said: "Absolutely love Mablethorpe, Sutton on Sea & Sandilands… glorious sandy beaches & never ending skies ! Can’t beat a good dose of vitamin sea."

James Parker wrote: "You know what, went yesterday after 17 years it's really cleaned up had a fantastic day with the wife." Anita Frost loves the beach, writing: "Mablethorpe pullover promenade and beach are excellent - clean and well used."

Junealice Hobsonbrown said: "My favourite seaside resort, the beach is beautiful the only thing lacking in Mablethorpe is it needs a swimming baths or a leisure centre with a spa and that would be perfect for the resort but I really love Mablethorpe and looking forward to my holiday there very soon.

Geoffrey Roper disagreed, meanwhile, saying: "The beach was so much better years ago, they appear to have dumped a load of much coarser sand on it recently."

"Wouldn't say the beach is accessible, though," Louise Grafton commented. "A proper wheelchair track to the sand would be amazing." Jonathan Hulbert said: "Go further up and head to Scarborough and surrounding coastal areas instead, much nicer places and a nicer scenic journey."
