Acclaimed Thai film director ML Pundhevanop Dhewakul died of lung cancer on Thursday night. He was 69 years old.
He was best known for two movies, Chua Fah Din Salai (Eternity) in 2010 and U-mong Phamuang (The Outrage) in 2011, which was based on the classic Akira Kurosawa film Rashomon.
Mom Noi, as he was better known, had been receiving treatment at Bangkok Christian Hospital for almost two months.
The filmmaker did not attend the premiere of his latest work Six Characters (2022, based on Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello) on Wednesday.
Chaiyapol Julien Poupart, who played one of the lead characters, told reporters then that Mom Noi missed the premiere for health reasons.
Mom Noi was born on March 16, 1953, to MR Chananwat Dhewakul and Bhakdi Dhewakul na Ayutthaya.
Other well-known films directed by Mom Noi include two Jan Dara films (2012 and 2013), Plae Kao (The Scar, 2014) and Mae Bia (2015, based on the novel by SEA Write laureate Vanich Charungkitanan).
He also taught acting at Mahidol and Chulalongkorn universities among other institutions.
His bathing rites will be held at Wat Thepsirin in Bangkok's Pomprap Sattruphai district today at 3.30pm and his funeral rites will be held at 7pm until next Friday.
