Director Matthew Vaughn teases forthcoming meta trilogy for Kick-Ass franchise

Director Matthew Vaughn teases development of Kick-Ass 3.

Director Matthew Vaughn has recently revealed exciting details about the highly anticipated third installment of the Kick-Ass franchise. In an interview with Collider, Vaughn described his approach to the film as 'very, very meta' and expressed his intention to create a whole new way of experiencing the 'R-rated superhero' genre.

Vaughn, who previously reinvented the superhero genre with the first Kick-Ass film in 2010, stated that the script for Kick-Ass 3 is currently in progress. He emphasized his desire to push boundaries and take the concept of Kick-Ass to new heights. With this upcoming movie, Vaughn aims to introduce a fresh and innovative take on the character.

The director also shed light on his plans for a new Kick-Ass trilogy, with Kick-Ass 3 serving as the third entry. The trilogy will kick off with the film School Fight, which has already been filmed and completed. Vaughn worked alongside stunt coordinator-turned-director Damien Walters on School Fight. Vaughn hinted that the second film in the trilogy, temporarily titled Vram, is currently being filmed.

When asked about releasing the trilogy's installments, Vaughn indicated that he does not plan to have all three films finished before releasing any of them. He mentioned a potential launch at the Toronto or Sundance Film Festival, aiming for this year or the next.

The original Kick-Ass film, based on the comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., followed the story of Dave Lizewski, an ordinary teenager who dons a superhero costume to fight crime. The movie gained a dedicated fanbase and played a significant role in paving the way for R-rated superhero movies like Deadpool. However, its sequel, Kick-Ass 2, which was written and directed by Jeff Wadlow, failed to replicate the success of its predecessor.

Fans can now eagerly speculate about Vaughn's plans for the Kick-Ass universe within his School Fight trilogy. The prospect of a 'very, very meta' approach, along with his previous success in revamping the superhero genre, promises an exciting and unique cinematic experience.

While fans await the release of Kick-Ass 3, they can look forward to Vaughn's upcoming film, Argylle. The spy thriller stars a star-studded cast, including Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson. Argylle is scheduled to hit theaters on February 2, 2024, and its trailer has ignited anticipation among audiences.

It's safe to say that Matthew Vaughn's creativity and innovative approach will continue to leave a lasting impact on the world of superhero cinema. As fans eagerly anticipate the next chapter in the Kick-Ass franchise, the promise of a 'very, very meta' reinvention ensures an engaging and thrilling ride.
