Deadly Dipo Akinyemi reckons Ayr are learning to win ugly as they set the Championship pace.
The striker’s double helped United over the line despite a poor performance at Hamilton on Friday night.
And the top scorer – who took his tally to 13 goals in 15 games – hailed the character shown in their TV win.
He said: “It wasn’t our best performance but the three points is all that matters.
“Good teams get the three points at the end of the day, whether they play well or not, they find a way to win.
“That’s what the boys did, so it was really good.
“The boys are together, we are resilient. Even when we go a goal down or a goal up, we stick together.
“The group of boys that we have are absolutely amazing.”
Akinyemi ended a three-game run without a goal in style with his brace at Accies.
He added: “As long as the boys feed me, I’ll make sure I’ll eat it and try and score.
“I’ve got 13 goals now. I’ve been told that three games without a goal is a goal drought now.
“So I had to end that one. So this was a good one for me personally.
“In my first four games in the Premier Sports Cup group games, I was getting in positions but it just wasn’t going in, it was coming off the bar or the post.
“But I told people at the beginning of the season that once I got one they will come in bunches.
“So that’s what’s happened and long may it continue."
Ayr’s position at the top of the Championship has got fans dreaming of a return to the top flight for the first time in 45 years.
And Akinyemi said: “It would be great to make that sort of history but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.
“We’re fully focusing on Inverness now and hopefully we will get another three points there.
“We just want to keep going with this run of form and keep collecting points.
“We’re taking it game by game. We know what our target is and what we are as a team.
“Of course, the belief is growing now but we won’t get ahead of ourselves and be too big-headed.
"But every game and every three points is closer to where we want to go."
