"Did Ookla just leak Windows vNext UI?": Or is this just a macOS mockup on Windows 11

Windows 11 Taskbar closeup.

Have we just received a glimpse of the future of Windows design? No, but Ookla did accidentally show a macOS window on Windows 11.

Earlier this month, Ookla and Microsoft announced a partnership that makes Speedtest the "integrated network performance testing platform across Bing and Windows."

Speedtest by Ookla has been integrated into Bing since 2023. It will now also allow Windows 11 users to check their PC's internet speed through the taskbar.

Microsoft has been working on an integrated speed test tool in Windows since late last year. The feature became available to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel in February.

So, why is the integration making the news rounds now? It's because engineer and Windows Dev MVP alum Rafael Rivera made a funny joke about the user interface shared by Ookla in a press release.

At least, I assume it's a joke. Rivera is up to date on trends and design language. It appears that his X post pokes fun at Ookla seemingly using a macOS mockup in its press release. I don't think we've seen the future of Windows 12 or anything like that, and I don't think that's what Rivera is suggesting.

Based on the interface shown by Ookla, it appears the company placed a macOS window inside the Windows taskbar. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. HP once mistakenly showed macOS on a laptop in an ad.

While not exactly the same, a Microsoft ad for PC gaming showed Google Chrome pinned to the taskbar earlier this year. Of course, Chrome is available and often used on Windows 11, but it was strange to see a Microsoft advertisement feature a browser that competes with Edge.

Unless Microsoft has made some major design changes, the integrated speed test tool on Windows 11 will not look like the image shown. If this is the new Windows UI, then Microsoft and Ookla need to schedule a very urgent meeting and Apple should probably send over an invoice.
