Five people, including two children, were killed after a Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle crashed into a sedan on the Mahabubnagar bypass road during the early hours of Monday, TOI reported. Police said the superbike was allegedly travelling at around 160 kmph, nearly three times the permitted speed limit, and was reportedly involved in a street race with other bikers at the time of the accident.
Bike rider Mohammad Avez, 29, and pillion rider Yakub Afzal, 30, died on the spot. Three passengers travelling in the rear seat of the car, identified as Arshiya Begum, 28, her 18-month-old son Amer, and 10-year-old Huzaifa, later succumbed to injuries at hospital.
Car occupants were returning from family gathering
Police told TOI that the occupants of the car were residents of Palakonda in Mahabubnagar and were returning from a family function at Christianpally in Mahabubnagar town when the accident occurred.
According to Mahabubnagar ASP NB Ratnam, Arshiya Begum’s husband Basith was driving the car, which had eight occupants, as reported by TOI. Three passengers died while another three sustained minor injuries. Basith escaped without injuries.
Officials said the motorcycle rammed into the rear left door of the Hyundai Verna while the car was taking a right turn at a median near Palakonda.
Police suspect overspeeding and possible street racing
Police said preliminary findings indicate that overspeeding by the biker was the primary reason behind the crash. The speedometer needle of the motorcycle was reportedly stuck at 160 kmph, which officials said could indicate an even higher travelling speed.
Investigators also said Avez was part of a group of 12 bikers from Hyderabad who had travelled to Mahabubnagar for a friend’s family function. The group reportedly reached the town around 10.30 pm and the accident took place around 12.30 am while they were returning to Hyderabad.
Police added that allegations made by the victim’s family regarding bikers racing each other are being investigated.
Bike recently purchased from Haryana
According to police, Avez was the second owner of the Hayabusa motorcycle and had purchased it from a person in Haryana. Although ownership transfer formalities had recently been completed, the bike still carried Haryana registration plates.
Case registered, forensic examination underway
Police said viscera samples of Avez have been preserved to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol during the incident.
A case has been registered under Sections 106(1) and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to causing death by negligence and acts endangering life or personal safety. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to family members after post-mortem examinations conducted at Mahabubnagar area hospital.
