Devikulam MLA A. Raja was injured in a clash between those supporting the national strike and the police at Munnar town on Tuesday morning.
The incident took place at 11 a.m. when agitators tried to block vehicular traffic in the town. The police thwarted the attempt, which resulted in a minor clash between them.
Mr. Raja was speaking at a venue there and he intervened in the matter. The agitators blocked the police vehicle and the police tried to push them back. The MLA, who was with the agitators, fell on the road. He was taken to the General Hospital. His condition was not serious, hospital sources said. Sub-inspector Sagar was also admitted to the hospital.
On the second day of the general strike, the district, especially towns in the high ranges, wore a deserted look. Shops and business establishments remained closed. Only private vehicles and two-wheelers plied. Workers did not turn up in the plantations.
Though the KSRTC operated some services in the morning from Kattappana, there were only very few travellers, said a police officer.
