The devastated family of a paramedic who died following a five-vehicle crash near Betws-y-Coed have paid tribute to "everyone's friend". Mark Pell was one of two paramedics from the London Ambulance Service who were on a training course with the North Wales Police Driver Training Unit at the time of the collision on the A5 shortly before 2.30pm on Thursday, April 7.
The crash involved five vehicles - a HGV, a pick-up and three motorcycles. Two paramedics were airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital by the Welsh Air Ambulance, while two other individuals from the HGV were taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor by ambulance.
Mr Pell, who had served with the London Ambulance Service since joining in 1994, died on Wednesday, April 13 at Stoke Hospital, after sustaining serious injuries in the collision. Paying tribute to him, North Wales Live report that his family said: “Mark was everyone’s friend. He is irreplaceable, his kindness and compassion shined through in everything he did, he has left a huge hole in all our lives that will never be filled. He was diligent and professional and will never be forgotten. Words cannot explain how empty his family, friends' and colleagues’ lives are now that he’s gone.”
The family also extended their thanks to members of the London Ambulance Service who supported the family between the day of the collision and Mark’s passing. They also gave a special mention to Rob Bentley from the Motorcycle Response Unit, who stayed with the family at Stoke Hospital during this difficult time.
Mr Pell will be forever missed by his family and was an ever-loving son to Roger and Marilyn, caring brother to Sarah, devoted partner to Sarah Jane, brother-in-law to Rob, and caring uncle to his nephews Oliver, Henry and Elliot. North Wales Police continue to appeal for any information in relation to the collision.
