Derry couple reach peak of Mount Kilimanjaro for charity

A Co Derry woman with type-1 diabetes and her partner have raised thousands of pounds for charity after conquering Mount Kilimanjaro.

Julianna Ayton and Matthew Norrby scaled Africa's highest peak last week before reaching the summit on February 27.

They are hoping to raise £5,000 for Ray of Sunshine, a UK children's charity that was formed in 2003 to "brighten the lives of children who are living with serious or life-limiting illnesses" between the ages of 3-18.

The couple are also aiming to raise funds for local man Leslie Smyth, who Belfast Live spoke with last year about his battle with cancer.

Julianna said that the climb had been "one massive life-changing experience".

She said: "On the 27th February, Matthew & I summited Mt Kilimanjaro. The highest free-standing mountain in the world and we stood at the top of Africa with some of the most amazing people in the world.

"It took us five days to get to base camp and our trek to the top took us eight whole hours.

"Eight hours of extreme mental and physical pressure & exhaustion, but we did it. Through everything, we did it.

"This climb has been one massive life-changing experience and the pictures and videos don’t even do any of it justice. Everything about this place has been amazing."

Matthew said there was "no better feeling" than being on top of the world.

He said: "On top of the world and there is no better feeling.

"A date we will always remember, 27/02/22, we stood on the roof of Africa and shared our journey with an amazing group of people."

Matthew added: "On day five, we made it to the summit after a massive 8-hour hike starting at 12am.

"Honestly, it was one of the toughest challenges we have ever faced."
