Denmark make winning return to Women's World Cup with late victory against China

Denmark made an emphatic return to the Women’s World Cup after a 16-year absence, securing a 1-0 victory against China with a dramatic 90th-minute header from Amalie Vangsgaard in an exhilarating match in Perth.

Both Denmark and China came into the game with similar rankings and ambitions in a closely contested Group C encounter. The match remained relatively subdued until the thrilling climax when Vangsgaard's soaring header stunned the 17,000-strong crowd, most of whom were fervently supporting the Asian champions.

China, led by the dynamic 22-year-old Zhang Linyan, started as the aggressors, displaying their speed and tenacity on the left wing. However, their efforts were met with Denmark's resilient defence, led by goalkeeper Lene Christensen, who made crucial saves to deny China an early lead.

Despite Denmark's entire line-up comprising World Cup debutants, they gradually settled into the game, with captain Pernille Harder leading the way after returning from a hamstring injury. The match's intensity rose as both teams battled fiercely for control, but poor finishing and a gritty China defence kept the scoreline level.

The Asian champions missed an opportunity to take the lead when Zhang's best chance was saved by Denmark's goalkeeper. Denmark, too, had their share of frustrations, with Rikke Sevecke receiving a yellow card for a shirt-pulling incident just before half-time.

After the break, star striker Wang Shuang was introduced, immediately making an impact with a powerful long-range shot that Christensen managed to keep out. The match continued to open up as both teams pressed for a breakthrough, but Denmark's Josefine Hasbo missed a golden opportunity to score in the 52nd minute.

With the game heading towards a draw, Denmark intensified their attack, and their efforts finally paid off in the dying moments. Amalie Vangsgaard's heroic header soared above everyone else to find the back of the net, securing a crucial victory for Denmark in their World Cup return.

For China, the loss was a setback in their bid to reclaim past glory after being early powerhouses in women's football. Despite their aspirations, Denmark emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter that showcased the passion and talent in women's football.
