The number that takes over the room
A normal platelet count sits between 1.5 lakh and 4 lakh per microlitre of blood. In dengue, it can drop to 20,000 or even lower, and in most of those cases, the patient still does not bleed. This is the central fact that the panic erases. The drop is real. The danger it implies is not automatic. Yet the moment a family sees a count below 50,000 on a lab report, the calls start: to relatives who had dengue before, to doctors on WhatsApp, to anyone who might know where to get a platelet transfusion arranged fast.
