Demons counting cost from epic King's Birthday win

Brody Mihocek's neck injury is the most serious among several concerns for Melbourne out of their epic AFL win.

Captain Max Gawn made it through the King's Birthday blockbuster against Collingwood with a sore shoulder and has five days before their next game against Essendon.

Match-winning midfielder Kysaiah Pickett will come under video scrutiny for a potential trip on Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard.

The Magpies hard man fell in the incident and dislocated his shoulder for the second time on Monday. That forced Maynard out of the game.

Mihocek was taken to hospital for scans after he was accidentally hurt in a tackle from Billy Frampton. Play was held up for 10 minutes before the former Collingwood forward was stretchered from the field.

Demons coach Steven King said in his post-game media conference that they were still waiting for confirmation about Mihocek's injury, although the forward was moving his arms and legs as he was taken from the MCG.

Gawn said he had gone into the win over Collingwood with the sore shoulder. It affected him, particularly early in the last quarter, but he was able to play out the match.

The Demons star is determined to play against Essendon next Saturday, again at the MCG.

After honouring Neale Daniher on Monday, a fortnight after the former Melbourne coach's death, the Demons will now come up against the Bombers, where he was a player.

Gawn was outmarked by Jack Bullen early in the last quarter and the Collingwood player kicked a crucial goal.

"I was able to play most of today unassisted. I got a little bit of help late in the game, but it responded really well," Gawn said.

"I probably didn't need a marking contest at full-back as my first contest of the (last) quarter, but it got going.

"I love playing footy, I love playing with this group, I love being at the MCG, and it's a bit of a Neale game again against Essendon, so I will be doing all I can to make sure it gets up.

"Three quarters of bumping into Dan McStay and Darcy Cameron got to me a little bit ... but I was able to bounce back."
