Democrats Turn Convention Roll Call Into Ultimate Dance Party

Spike Lee watches as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul casts their vote for Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris during the Democratic National Convention Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024, in C

The Democratic National Convention took an unexpected turn on Tuesday as delegates from various states and territories gathered to award their delegates to Vice President Kamala Harris. The convention roll call, typically a formal affair, was transformed into a lively dance party featuring a unique song for each state and territory.

DJ Cassidy took the stage in a striking royal blue suit, spinning popular tunes that represented each region. From Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' for Michigan to Tupac Shakur's 'California Love' for California, the event resembled an elite karaoke night.

Notable appearances included Atlanta's own Lil Jon, who strutted through the United Center to the beats of 'Turn Down for What.' The Democrats aimed to infuse joy and positive energy into the proceedings while emphasizing the urgency of defeating Republican nominee Donald Trump.

This year's roll call vote featured rising political stars such as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear. Celebrities like movie director Spike Lee and actor Sean Astin also made appearances to represent their respective states.

While the event exuded a festive atmosphere, there were also poignant moments. Delegates shared personal stories, including one delegate from Texas who revealed her struggle with a denied abortion request during a difficult pregnancy.

Despite the celebratory mood, the roll call vote maintained a sense of seriousness. Only Vice President Kamala Harris received enough signatures to be officially nominated, with other votes tallied as 'present' as per Democratic Party rules.

The musical selections added an element of risk, with each state choosing a song that reflected its identity or political stance. From Tom Petty's 'I Won't Back Down' in Florida to Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Sweet Home Alabama' in Alabama, the choices were diverse and symbolic.

Overall, the Democratic National Convention succeeded in blending entertainment with political significance, setting a unique tone for the upcoming election season.
