Democratic lawmakers are expressing strong concerns over President-elect Donald Trump's choice of Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz for attorney general. Gaetz's nomination for this crucial role has sparked controversy due to his close ties to Trump and his past criticisms of the Justice Department.

The attorney general plays a vital role in shaping and enforcing the administration's policies, particularly in areas such as immigration, reproductive health, and political retribution. Gaetz has been a vocal critic of the Justice Department under President Joe Biden, accusing it of targeting conservatives, including Trump.

Connecticut Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy has labeled Gaetz as 'dangerously unqualified' for the position, citing his unwavering support for Trump's actions that undermine democracy. Murphy expressed shock at the nomination, suggesting that Gaetz's appointment could lead to the politicization of the Justice Department.

California Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff echoed Murphy's concerns, warning that confirming Gaetz would endorse potential abuses of power within the DOJ. Schiff urged the Senate to reject Gaetz's confirmation, emphasizing the need to uphold the integrity of the Department of Justice.

Delaware Sen. Chris Coons also expressed disbelief at Trump's decision to nominate Gaetz. Coons pledged to scrutinize Gaetz's qualifications during the confirmation process, emphasizing the Senate's responsibility to ensure that only suitable candidates are appointed to key positions.

Despite the strong opposition from Democratic lawmakers, the final decision on Gaetz's confirmation lies with the Senate. Coons and other Democrats are hopeful that Republican senators will join them in urging Trump to reconsider his choice for attorney general.
