Delhi: Shoppers to get cloth bag in exchange of plastic waste

NEW DELHI: East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) from Monday is going to organise an awareness campaign supported by the Indian Pollution Control Association for 30 days in a bid to make east Delhi markets plastic waste-free zones.

“It will include stationing of ‘plastic exchange-kiosks’ at different locations in markets where volunteers will motivate and educate shopkeepers to avoid single-use plastics,” said an EDMC official.

To begin with, 10 places have been identified, including Laxmi Nagar, Nirman Vihar, Lal Quarter, Chota Bazar, Rohtash Nagar and vegetable market at Madhu Vihar, Saini Enclave(near metro station), Khureji fruit market, Dilshad Garden and Satnam road (Krishna Nagar), with more spots to be added gradually.

“The plan is to cover maximum markets and focus on major vegetables/fruit markets simultaneously. These kiosks will give cloth bags in exchange of plastic waste to commuters or shopkeepers and will also educate citizens to phase out of single-use plastic,” said the official.
