Declan Rice told the one thing he needs to improve - but it won't worry Manchester United

Graeme Souness has picked out one area of Declan Rice's game that he must improve - but it shouldn't worry Manchester United.

Having emerged as one of the hottest properties in European football, the 23-year-old has already been identified as United's main transfer target heading into the summer window.

Key figures in the Old Trafford boardroom have long since been interested in the West Ham midfielder.

However, after signing Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo last summer, they were unable to snap up a top-level midfielder in the same window.

Despite concerns West Ham will dig their heels in over a valuation, Rice is still a top target for United.

A would-be fee exceeding £100million has been mentioned, and Souness has claimed he wants to see more goals from a player who has only netted once in the Premier League this season.

However, United will argue that is no real concern if he opts for a high-profile switch to Old Trafford.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness said: "I'd want more goals from him.

"In the modern game with the way the pitches are, for central midfield players coming onto things they've got no excuses. The ball's running smoothly, it's coming to you on a carpet and he's scored one goal this year, Declan Rice."

Fellow pundit Matt Murray added: "I speak to a lot of goalkeepers and they're around the England squads.

"West Ham say he's brilliant from outside the box. He scored a good goal against Watford - passing it in.

"He needs to get into the positions so there are the tactics and it's him recognising it. But when he gets there he's definitely got the quality so I feel that he will think looking at top, top midfielders, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, they scored those goals and I think he needs to do that."
