Declan Gallagher fires back at Aberdeen 'nonsense' as defender rejects claims he couldn't cut it at old club

Defiant defender Declan Gallagher brushed off claims he wasn’t good enough for Aberdeen as “nonsense”.

The centre-back made his competitive debut for St Mirren against Arbroath on Saturday after an underwhelming spell at the Dons. While the tie ended in defeat, Gallagher is adamant there’s plenty more to come from both him and his new Saints team-mates when they eventually hit their stride.

Speaking to Record Sport he said: “It’s not great losing any game, let alone to a last-minute goal. “I don’t think we looked very sharp. A few of the boys need to get a few more minutes in the legs, obviously it’s still very early doors for all of us. But that’s no excuse considering it’s early for Arbroath as well and they’re a part-time team. We should have been fitter. We did create a good few chances. Joe Shaughnessy hit the bar and I had one cleared off the line. I would have loved to start my career here with a goal of course. I couldn’t have come much closer, the boy was stood behind the line as he cleared it!

“We played some good stuff. You can see as a team we’ll be fine once we’re up to full speed.

"Everything was up in the air when I was at Aberdeen. It was a stop-start season for me. There was a lot of talk about me not being good enough for Aberdeen, but that’s just nonsense.

“I’ve got nine international caps for Scotland already. There’s no way you can do that and not be good enough to go and play at Aberdeen. It wasn’t a good fit but I’m delighted to be here at St Mirren.”
