Deadline Day state of play: Newcastle eye 11th hour move for midfielder with Jonjo Shelvey deal done

Jonjo Shelvey has passed his medical with his move to Nottingham Forest due to be confirmed in due course.

The midfielder will leave United once the paperwork stage of his deal is completed but back on Tyneside, Newcastle chiefs are looking over a range of loan options. Eddie Howe made it clear that he would attempt to replace Shelvey in the closing hours of the window.

However, a hectic final day lies in store for the Magpies with a League Cup semi-final second leg also set to be played later this evening against Southampton. Newcastle had made an enquiry for Sheffield United's 6ft 5in midfielder Sander Berge but after a day in which he was linked with Fulham there is now radio silence coming from the player's agent.

On a more positive note Harrison Ashby, Newcastle have confirmed the signing of West Ham defender. Speaking last night, David Moyes confirmed the Hammers had been unsuccessful in their attempts to keep the right-back at the club.

Speaking after his move was confirmed the player said: "I could not be happier. I can't get the smile off my face and it's a proud day for me and my family.

"I'm buzzing to come to the game tonight, to meet the fans and to get a taste of the atmosphere. I wouldn't be here today without West Ham, so I thank all the coaches that I had from growing up to now, but I'm delighted to be here."

Howe had said yesterday on incoming business for a midfielder: "There's no guarantee on that. With other transfers, we will try and see what we can do. In terms of permanent signings that will be very difficult, we will look at a loan situation but it has to be the right player."

Karl Darlow is due to go out on loan after tonight's League Cup tie against Southampton. He will sign for the Tigers on a six-month loan deal. Howe knows the pressure is off in some ways having landed £45million Anthony Gordon but admitted to be being "light" in midfield.
