The DCU community will pay their respects to a GAA star and primary teaching student who passed away suddenly.

A vigil will take place for Red Og Murphy at 7:00pm tomorrow evening on St. Patrick's campus.

The 21-year-old was a young Sligo player and former Australian Rules player.

Red Og was a talented and well-known footballer who played for the Sligo county team as well as his own local club, Curry GAA. He also played for the university's GAA team.

The Student’s Union said: “DCUSU is deeply saddened over the loss of DCU Student Red Og Murphy, on Friday 1 April. The thoughts and prayers of the student body go out to his family, friends, teammates and classmates.

“We will be holding a vigil with a balloon demonstration on the lawn on St. Pats campus to pay respects to Red Og, all students are welcome.

“We will also be arranging transport to and from the funeral once details are released. If you are interested in travelling to the funeral, please fill out this form We understand this is a very distressing and upsetting time for many students.”

DCU have told students they can avail of free counselling if they feel that they need support and wish to talk to someone.

They can also text HELLO to 50808 at any time to be connected with a trained volunteer to talk through things.

The DCU student was named on the Sigerson Team of the Year earlier this month.

He returned from an AFL stint at North Melbourne in late 2019 after eight months with the club and went on to feature in all 12 of Sligo's league and championship games throughout 2020 and 2021, scoring a total of 1-15.

A notice on RIP.ie reads: “The death has occurred, suddenly in Dublin, of Red Og Murphy. Rest In Peace. Funeral arrangements later.”
