David de Gea set for Manchester United milestone with Premier League appearance vs Newcastle

David de Gea is set to make his 500th appearance for Manchester United against Newcastle on Sunday.

De Gea has spent over 11 years at Old Trafford after joining the club for £18.9 million from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011 and he will join an illustrious group of players who have made 500 appearances for United should he play this weekend.

The 31-year-old was asked about the approaching milestone on Thursday and he said: "Yeah [aware of it], it's something massive in my career. It's unbelievable, to be honest. I can't wait to play the game and I hope I can play another 500."

De Gea is expected to start against Newcastle on Sunday and he will join Denis Irwin, Wayne Rooney, Gary Neville, Sir Bobby Charlton Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs among the list of players who have made 500 appearances for the club.

The Spaniard has kept 169 clean sheets across that period and he's won four trophies: the Premier League, the Europa League, the FA Cup and the League Cup, during his 11-year stay at Old Trafford, which has seen him become a popular fan favourite.

De Gea has won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award on four occasions, more than any other player in United's history, while he's also collected the club’s Players' Player of the Year award three times, which he most recently won last season.

The goalkeeper has also been named in the PFA Team of the Year five times while in the 2017/18 season he won the Golden Glove award in the Premier League after keeping 18 clean sheets, playing a key role in his side finishing runners-up.

De Gea briefly lost his first-choice status under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but he reclaimed that No.1 position last season. Although his contract expires in the summer of 2023, United have the option to extend the deal by another year.
