David Beckham has opened up about an awkward meeting he had with the Queen 20 years ago when Her Majesty asked how is family was doing.
The former Manchester United star says he was left speechless as he handed over the Jublilee baton at an event back in 2002 having just won the Premier League for the sixth time in his professional career.
David looking back at that day, he remembered the Queen said: "How's Victoria, how's the kids?" But it soon turned awkward as he added: "I couldn't even answer, it was an incredible moment.
It was a moment Beckham would remember forever, although he did freeze under pressure. Pictures of the special day showed the sporting legend wearing a classy suit as he shook hands with the Monarch, who wore a green dress.
On Friday, Beckham paid tribute to the Queen on a message on social media as he admitted he is "devastated" by the news. Her Majesty passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday at the age of 96 following 70 years on the throne.
"I’m truly saddened by the death of Her Majesty, The Queen," the ex-footballer wrote on Instagram. "What an outpouring of love and respect we saw for the Platinum Jubilee for her life of service.
"How devastated we all feel today shows what she has meant to people in this country and around the world. How much she inspired us with her leadership. How she comforted us when times were tough. Until her last days she served her country with dignity and grace. This year she would have known how loved she was. My thoughts and prayers are with our Royal Family."
Beckham also took to Instagram earlier this summer to pay tribute to the Queen’s 70-year reign. And he shared photos of the monarch, including one of him meeting her, as he wrote: "Today, we celebrate our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. 70 years of service and inspirational leadership of our country. Let’s come together and commemorate her remarkable reign with a great British party these next few days."
News of the Queen’s deteriorating condition broke on Thursday morning. And Buckingham Palace confirmed in a statement later in the day that she had died. "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon," read the statement. "The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
