Darwin Nunez injury update as Jurgen Klopp explains Liverpool 'chance' for Real Madrid

Darwin Nunez will be given every chance of being available for Liverpool’s Champions League showdown with Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Nunez has failed to overcome the shoulder injury he suffered during the 2-0 Premier League win at Newcastle United at the weekend.

The Uruguay international suffered the problem when challenging with Magpies defender Fabian Schar during the second half. Nunez was able to play on for a short while before being replaced.

The striker has been undergoing treatment at the AXA Training Centre in the hope of being available for the Champions League round of 16 first leg against Real Madrid.

And Jurgen Klopp is still refusing to rule the 23-year-old out of the blockbusting showdown.

The Reds boss said: “There is a chance, from all the possible scenarios. Apart from being absolutely nothing - that's not the case. We have to see how he can deal with the pain. When we know that, we will make a decision."

Speaking to reporters after the weekend win at Newcastle, Klopp had initially said: “The bad news is Darwin has something on his shoulder. We will see. In that situation, I don’t know what he whistled at to be honest, against him.

“In the end he had to go off with a shoulder issue and we need further assessments. I don’t know in the moment. In the moment it’s painful. Hopefully it’s just painful and nothing more.”

Liverpool's showdown against Madrid kicks off at 8pm tomorrow night at Anfield. The return leg falls on March 15.

Madrid have their own injury issues to contend with coming into the hotly-anticipated match - especially in midfield.

Earlier today, it was confirmed that Aurelien Tchouameni and Toni Kroos were not part of the squad flying out to Merseyside.

Both midfielders will be missing on Tuesday, as well as Ferland Mendy who was already absent due to a thigh issue.
